I'm Mikala Whitaker, and I started The Unanchored Passenger to help travelers like you feel empowered to travel solo and get out there in the world.

I dreamed of walking the Camino for close to a decade, and I knew I had to finally make it happen to help heal after a devastating end to my engagement. I hiked my first Camino in 2023, starting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. In 2025 I returned to hike the two main Portuguese routes.

I didn't prioritize training for my first Camino and quickly realized what a mistake that was. Since then, I've made it a point to train more for my future Caminos and decided to put together a training system to help other women do the same.

I designed this training system based on my years of experience studying optimal performance for marathon running and hiking.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this enough training for the Camino?
    Yes. The Gentle Start Plans are designed for walking up to about 10 miles (16 km) per day and the Strong & Steady Plans are designed for walking between around 10 miles (16 km) and up to as many as 20 miles (32 km) or more.

    Note that while these plans are designed for 1-6 month timeframes, I recommend training for around 3 months or more if possible, especially if you haven't been very active or want to walk much longer distances than you're used to.

    However, if you only have a month or two to train, don't fret! These plans have got you covered, but they may just feel a bit more difficult in the beginning since they can't increase distance as gradually as longer plans.
  • I’m starting from zero. Is this too hard?
    No. That’s exactly why the Gentle Start Plans exist. They begin with shorter distances of 2-3 miles (3-5 km) most days and build slowly.
  • I'm pretty fit already. Do I need this training system?
    It's up to you! If you're looking for structured guidance to help you prepare for the Camino specifically, you might benefit from this training system.

    However, if you are quite active in your day-to-day life and already feel prepared to walk 10-15 miles (16-24 km) per day, then you may not find as much use out of this training system.
  • How fast will I feel more confident?
    You should start to feel more confident and ready to tackle training after reading through the training guide.

    As you progress through the training plan, you should start to feel more confident over time.
  • Do I need special equipment?
    No. All you'll need are comfortable walking shoes and eventually your Camino backpack. That's it.
  • How do I access the resources?
    I recommend first opening everything from a computer. It can help if you have a Google account since the files are stored in the Google Drive, but it's not absolutely necessary.

    You can download all the files to your own Google Drive or your computer. The workbook and journal resource is designed to be printed, and the training plans are in a Google Sheet that you can edit as needed and print out as well.
  • Is this a subscription?
    No. You pay the price for the training system once and get lifetime access. That means if I make any updates down the line, you'll get those too.
  • Can I return this if I don't like it?
    I cannot accept returns for the training systen given the digital nature of the product. However, if you run into any technical or quality control issues, please reach out at mikala@unanchoredpassenger.com.
  • Is this medical advice?
    No. This training system is for informational purposes and is based on my own experiences and reading I've done into exercise science.
